MORAN, REV. FRANCIS T.

MORAN, REV. FRANCIS T. (16 Feb. 1865-19 Oct. 1929), Roman Catholic priest and civic leader, was a nationally-known writer and lecturer. He served as pastor of ST. PATRICK'S PARISH (1901-28) and rector of ST. MARY SEMINARY (1928-29). Moran was born in Valparaiso, IN, to Katherine Kelleher and Peter Moran. Educated in parochial schools in Indiana, he graduated from St. Francis Seminary (Milwaukee, WI), St. Charles College (Baltimore, MD), and Cleveland's St. Mary Seminary. He was ordained 19 December 1888. Before coming to Cleveland, Fr. Moran served churches in the Toledo, OH, area (1889-96) and St. Mary Church in Akron (1896-1901). He served as treasurer of the Catholic Education Association of the United States and, locally, as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Civic League, Associated Charities, and the CLEVELAND HUMANE SOCIETY. He belonged to the school board of the Diocese of Cleveland and worked on the parish level for integration of AFRICAN AMERICANS into diocesan schools (see PAROCHIAL EDUCATION (CATHOLIC)).
